i visited the race tracks at the santa anita park this weekend. it's a beautiful and strange place.
built in 1934, it's the oldest track in southern california. the history and former glamour of the space is palpable, but it's had a turn of bad luck in the last decade. declining attendance has left the park in financial distress, aggravated by various development plans that threatened the historic site and its surrounding property. the park brought in the HBO show luck to film at the tracks only to find itself involved in some seriously negative publicity when three horses died on set. not such a great run.
i hope the park finds a break--some kind of lucky streak. it's too good to lose.
