west african or soudanese-style mosques are catching my imagination today. these clay structures, with their tapered minarets and spiky exteriors are all kinds of exciting--they are familiar and otherworldly; welcoming and foreboding. the spikes are wooden stakes called toron and act both as scaffolding and ornamentation.
